    Rising tensions severely strained all aspects of medical care in Haiti throughout 2019, and MSF treated increasing numbers of patients, especially for trauma and violence-related injuries.

    Since mid-2018, Haiti has been in the grips of a major political and economic crisis. In 2019, this led to massive demonstrations that shut down much of the country for months at a time, as streets were barricaded and protesters clashed with the police…

    Haiti: Dozens of people hit by stray bullets

    Since last weekend, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders is seeing a significant increase in the number patients wounded by stray bullets in its medical facilities in the capital. Since the start of violent clashes between armed groups in the peripheral neighbourhoods, MSF’s Emergency Center in Turgeau has seen almost 80 people with gunshot wounds, most of them by stray bullets.

    Thousands of people trapped by armed clashes in Cité Soleil

    Thousands of people are trapped without drinking water, food or medical care in an isolated area of the Cité Soleil neighborhood of Port-au-Prince as armed groups battle for control of the area, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warned today, calling on armed groups to spare civilians and humanitarian organizations to respond to the urgent needs of the population.

    “After the earthquake, the situation was like nothing I had seen before”

    On 14 August, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti. MSF has been present on the island for 30 years and was quickly deployed to care for the victims. Debra Donckel-Sances, Account Manager at MSF Luxembourg, did a detachment to Haiti for four weeks in the aftermath of the quake. In this interview, she explains the harsh living conditions in which the Haitian people and MSF staff are adjusting to the new normal.
    At Immaculate Conception Hospital in Les Cayes, MSF staff are providing physiotherapy to patients injured in the earthquake, helping them regain strength and mobility.

    Two months after the earthquake, health needs remain high

    Two months since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southern Haiti, medical needs remain high in the affected areas. While many people injured in the earthquake continue their treatment and rehabilitation, other medical needs have increased in the earthquake-affected areas due to the destruction of homes, health facilities and other infrastructure.

    Earthquake survivors need continued care in the south

    The greatest number of deaths and injuries from Haiti’s August 14 earthquake occurred in the Sud department. Prior to this disaster, hospitals and clinics were already scarce in remote areas of Sud, and the earthquake damaged or destroyed many health facilities and roadways, making it difficult for earthquake survivors in rural areas to reach care quickly.

    After the earthquake, a surgical team works nonstop

    Dr Xavier Kernizan is an orthopedic surgeon who normally works at MSF's Tabarre hospital in Port-au-Prince. Since the August 14 earthquake, he has been working with an MSF surgical team in Jérémie, where 54 injuries were treated, 36 of which were operated on in one week.

    Initial evaluations and first interventions after the earthquake

    Saturday, August 14, at 8:30 am local time, the earth trembled in the southern peninsula of Haiti. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake caused severe damage to buildings, houses and main access roads in the three provinces of Grand'Anse, Nippes and Sud. The provisional death toll is estimated at more than 1,300 with more than 5,700 people injured, according to Haitian authorities.
