    In 2019, renewed conflict in Libya exacerbated the suffering of migrants and refugees trapped there without protection or assistance. Many who tried to flee across the Mediterranean Sea were forced back.

    According to the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, there are more than 355,000 internally displaced people and nearly 50,000 registered refugees in the country…

    MSF calls for evacuation of most vulnerable migrants in Libya to safe countries

    International medical organisation MSF calls on safe countries such as European and north American states, among others, to offer protection to migrants currently trapped in Libya to urgently accelerate the evacuation of the most vulnerable people by strengthening existing mechanisms and opening alternative pathways for them to leave the country.

    Five years of EU-sponsored violence and abuse in Libya and the central Mediterra

    In February 2017, the Italian government signed an EU-sponsored agreement with the Libyan government. The MoU is part of a broader defensive strategy being pursued by European governments, based on a security approach against migrants.     Closure of detention centre exposes migrants to even worse conditions

    On 14 October, Libyan authorities closed the Karareem detention centre in Misrata and transferred more than a hundred refugees and migrants arbitrarily detained in this facility to two other detention centres in the same region.
